Why: Set in Lake Michigan, Chicago is renowned for it's architecture, museums, public art, food and sports teams. "Choose Chicago" urges their tourism board and indeed, why not. With a downtown waterfront, world class dining, shopping, modern skyscrapers and landmark buildings, Chicago is a bustling, dynamic city for a getaway.
What: Start with three totally free activities that are ranked as much-loved local favorites. Check out the Lincoln Park Zoo with stunning skyline views without spending a cent, it's always open and always free. Head over to Millennium Park with extensive public art installations, free concerts, films, a wading pool and in winter an ice rink, either bring your own skates or rent a pair for a nominal fee. Be sure to save an afternoon for Navy Pier, set in 50 acres of parkland with a boardwalk, amusement park, shops, restaurants and firework displays every Wednesday and Sunday throughout summer.
